Music belongs in my Learning Tree because a song can make us stop, listen, and ask a question we might otherwise avoid. Music and lyrics invite us to examine both the words and our own response to them. At 76, I hear Derrick Dove & the Peacekeepers\u2019 \u201cWhen Did I Get Old\u201d through a lifetime that has included immigration, military service, technology, and teaching. I do not hear a complete account of my life in it. I hear an opening to ask how time changes our view of who we were and who we are still becoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The song\u2019s repeated question sounds simple, but it can mean several things. Is the speaker noticing a change in his body, the world around him, or his place in it? The words move beyond a birthday or a number. They suggest a painful gap between an earlier sense of confidence and a present sense of loss.
