My name is Carlos; I was born in El Salvador and arrived at 11 years old. As a non-English speaker, I had to find ways to learn the language as quickly as I could. Being a passionate movie and comic book consumer, I chose this methodology of alternative learning tools that helped me increase my vocabulary and critical thinking skills. I would go to the library and read. If I had money, I would go to the movies. As a very young boy, my Grandfather introduced me to writers such as Dumas, Dickens, Twain, Burroughs, and many more. I also discovered comic books, or as they are known today, graphic novels, and I immersed myself in the language through these tools.
